ADRIFT - Five new Ganseys knitted in the traditional way, by hand, in the round, using the techniques and knowledge passed down through generations but their patterns will speak of the challenges facing commercial fishers today.
The designs, knitted for five local Fishermen, explore the changing conditions of the sea and the pressures placed upon those who make their living from it: climate change, commercial market closure, changing fish populations and the increasingly uncertain relationship between fishermen and their environment. The Ganseys are co-created with 5 knitters from our recent Gansey courses, bringing together traditional knowledge, contemporary experience and the creativity of a new community of makers.

Emma Sprawson

I am an illustrator who paints in a naïve style. I studied for a degree at Brighton art college, and a MA from Saint Martins in London. I don’t try and make accurate representations of things but try to bring a sense of explosion and joy into people’s living rooms.
Nature and colourful people inspire me- the circus, Indian imagery and the beauty of the natural world. I believe in revamping old things, so I recycle frames from charity shops instead of using new ones.

What makes my paintings unique, is that I paint the frames with illustrations, so they become part of the picture.

I often do commissions for people based around subjects they like.
I run an organisation called mindful art club with Peggy, helping people suffering from mental health issues and social isolation by using creativity. Our aim is to get back to that feeling when we enjoyed art as a child without judging our ability.

Polly Plouviez

Polly Plouviez, originally trained in Textile Design, recently returned to her first love of painting, incorporating a Masters undertaken at Artist University Plymouth.

Due to a late diagnosis of Dyslexia, her focus remained for a long time on using a muse, the Jelly Fish, to best represent her ‘untethered’ feelings around neurodiversity. Her other passion is flowers, colour and the materiality of paint.

In her current work, she paints more intuitively and physically and is looking to scale and incorporate oil paint into her paintings. ‘Painting is one of the hardest challenges in my life and also the most rewarding’ .
