REPAIRED, RETURNING, REOPENING: ‘STAIRWAY TO DEVON’ IS BACK
Posted on: 17 Feb 2025

The Devil's Point staircase at Royal William Yard is on its way back to the Yard and will reopen later this month – after a three month renovation project to restore it and protect it for the future.
The impressive 63-step structure was removed and repaired by specialists. It will arrive back at Royal William Yard and be lifted back into place on Wednesday 19th February. Once the reinstallation and final checks are complete, it is expected to open to the public later the following week.
Known as the Western King steps and dubbed the ‘Stairway to Devon’, the flight of steps connects Royal William Yard to Devil’s Point along the South West Coast Path. A diversion has been in place since the refit started in November – but the route will revert to include the steps again, once they reopen.
Urban Splash – the regeneration specialist and developer of Royal William Yard – has worked with Natural England and the South West Coast Path Association on the restoration project to ensure this captivating piece of architecture is fit to welcome many more visitors for years to come.
The staircase is a multi-award-winning piece of architecture, climbing a 12-metre high defensive wall and punching through the 1-metre thick limestone fortification to form a link for the National Trail. It’s an iconic structure and well worth visiting, once it takes pride of place back at Royal William Yard.
