ARCADE LAUNCHES: NEW RETAIL & LEISURE DESTINATION WELCOMES FIRST BUSINESS
Posted on: 15 Jul 2025

A new shopping destination is opening at Royal William Yard with the launch of Arcade, a collection of six brand new units under one roof. Set within the Grade I listed Brewhouse building and facing onto the marina, Arcade brings a new type of shopping experience to the popular Plymouth landmark.
Each of the six unique spaces is designed to work as flexible monthly pop-ups, longer-term premises, and anything in between – acting as blank canvas for independent retailers, makers, and brands. These versatile spaces lend themselves to leisure and hospitality uses too. The launch of Arcade marks the latest evolution in Royal William Yard's ongoing regeneration led by Urban Splash.
Leading the charge as Arcade's very first tenant is Nala's Pet Co., a local independent business. The official launch on 3rd August will see Arcade come alive as its flagship business opens alongside a curated selection of pop-up stalls that showcase the best of the South West.
Adding something new to Royal William Yard, Arcade complements the existing line-up of restaurants, bars, cultural spaces, workplaces and residential properties at the vibrant waterfront destination that welcomes over one million visitors a year.
Innovative commercial concept
With monthly licensing options on the table alongside longer-term leases of up to six years, Arcade offers space for small independents to flourish, national brands to showcase themselves in Plymouth, and seasonal businesses to thrive.
Each of the units – ranging from 492 to 1,303 square feet – feature roller shutters allowing businesses to operate independently and set their own hours, up to 11pm daily. The design means that shoppers can flow easily through the whole space, connected by communal areas and facilities. The site's industrial heritage is present throughout, with striking raw finishes, exposed stonework, soaring ceilings and historic details.
Emma Gardiner, Head of Commercial Property at Urban Splash, said: “Arcade represents our commitment to making Royal William Yard a destination that offers something for everyone. It’s a fresh approach to modern retail in a historic setting, creating an atmosphere where experiences and community come together.
“We’re pleased to welcome our first shop the goal is to fill Arcade with businesses and brands that complement what we have at the Yard, that add something new to the dynamic, and bring something unique to the city.”
A perfect partnership
Nala's Pet Co. embodies exactly the kind of innovative, quality-focused business that Arcade was designed to support. The business built its reputation through years of trading at Royal William Yard's Good Food & Craft Market, making the move to Arcade a natural progression as its first official business premises.
Tom Hall's journey began through frustration with mainstream pet food brands that offered few benefits and negatively impacted his German Shepherd Nala's health and behaviour. After doing his homework, a business was born five years ago with a clear ethos: to help people understand and access high-quality pet food that positively impacts health, wellbeing and longevity.
At Arcade, the shop will offer a carefully curated selection of wet, dry and raw dog food with a local delivery service, the highest quality toys, toiletries and natural remedies, plus beds, leads, collars and dog walking accessories.
Far from a typical pet shop, the interior will feature a fusion of neon signs and industrial fittings, with a picture wall where customers can pose for pet photos, and Tom on hand to provide support and guidance. This approach perfectly captures Arcade's philosophy of creating memorable retail experiences that go beyond simple transactions.
Tom is already collaborating with local Yard businesses to develop dog walks and socialisation sessions, embedding himself in the culture and community that makes Royal William Yard special. When he launches on 3rd August, Tom will run giveaways and encourage people to bring their pets along.
Tom Hall, Founder of Nala's Pet Co., said: “Having successfully been part of Royal William Yard Good Food & Craft Market for years, the chance to be based here felt like the logical next step. We have rebranded, found the best quality brands to stock, and see the opportunity to offer something entirely unique at this special location. It's a great feeling to be first through the door at Arcade and we look forward to welcoming customers – and their pets – into our shop.”
A destination that delivers
As the bustling waterfront site moves into its busy summer season, businesses interested in being part of the Arcade line-up are encouraged to act quickly to get involved. A dedicated commercial team means that licences can be issued within a week, enabling businesses to be up and running promptly.
Emma Gardiner adds: “Whether you're a local independent seeking your first premises or an established brand looking for something unique, Arcade offers an exceptional opportunity to trade in a leading Devon destination, packed with character and potential. Arcade is a space primarily for retail, but we are also open to exciting businesses across leisure and hospitality that can bring something unique to the Yard.”
This development continues the Yard's 20-year regeneration as Urban Splash breathes new life into the former Naval victualling site that had fallen into disrepair. Even as it marks its 200th anniversary, this historic location continues to evolve and do things differently, proving that heritage and innovation can work hand in hand.
