Yard Sessions brings an eclectic mix of live music in a relaxed setting at Royal William Yard. Taking place every Friday evening this summer at Firestone Bay between 5-8:30 pm. Featuring handpicked International artists alongside the brightest talent on the South West scene, from laid back folk and roots to sassy R & B, mesmerising gypsy jazz to pulsing Rhythm & Blues. Grab some friends and enjoy sun downers to welcome in the weekend with hot street food, craft beer from Steel Brew Co and wine from Le Vignoble.
All located at the home of South West SUP based at Firestone Arches who will be running stand up paddle board lessons from 3-4:30 and regular club paddle sessions from 6-7pm.
The infamous Vince Lee is renowned as one of the top blues singer/ guitarists of his generation.
Based in the South West he has toured the UK & Europe for 40 years. A truly authentic musician playing music from the 1920’s & 30’s the songs tell stories of bank robbers, bootleggers, murderers, prisoners and adulterers. Something for everyone!
Alex Hart is charismatic singer songwriter from Devon who will soothe you into the weekend with her blend of country, roots and folk. Having started out as a live performer from a young age Alex has already performed at some legendary venues including the Troubadour, Ronnie Scotts and many great festival stages in the South West and way beyond. She tours with some quality acts including her own Alex HartBand, Plymouth girl band The Trees and Martin Barre from Jethro Tull with whom she has just enjoyed an extensive tour of the United States.
Ross Kelly is the frontman for popular funk Behemoths, 'Freshly Squeezed'. This is the acoustic blues and soul arm of his interest. He plays classic soul numbers with his own flavour, from Joe Cocker to Marvin Gaye and back round to The Kinks, with a few choice originals thrown in.
Armed with a mesmerising batch of original songs, summer vibes, catchy hooks and soulful melodies, Rue is a treasure! Delivered with a melisma vocal style and sassy jazz guitar expect a smooth blend of contemporary jazz and R'n'B. Fresh from a recent show at Cheltenham Jazz Festival prepare to be completely drawn into Rue's world!
New Antimatador frontman Jak James is a One man One guitar troubadour, blending gritty guitar tones with a mesmerising, soulful voice. After some mainstream success with his previous band 'Warhorns' he's off in a more delicate direction. He draws regular comparisons with the likes of Ben Howard, The XX and Patrick Watson.
Calvin Thomas is a Singer/Songwriter from the seaside city of Plymouth. His songwriting has been described as honest and poetic, with a voice that transcends generations, reminiscent of Ray Lamontagne or James Morrison. Calvin's influences range throughout many genres including Folk, Blues and Punk and he brings them together with real effect when he plays live.
Russell is a fine blues guitar player and singer based in Plymouth. Performing mostly blues and RnB music complete with regular off shoots into Swing, Jazz, Country and Rock n Roll. His sets are always full of raw energy and you’re unlikely to ever hear the same set twice.
Matthew Gordon Price is an alternative folk musician based in Devon. Known for his honest and heartfelt performances, he provides a raw emotional narrative, warming acoustic melodies and ambient swells, drawing comparisons to Damien Rice, Marcus Mumford and Glenn Hansard. A legend on the Plymouth scene, Joe's style has drawn on a variety of genres from his musically eclectic and varied background. The last four years has seen him settled in Spain entertaining crowds with his distinctive, acoustic soul feel. Joe takes great pleasure in dropping a bunch of well known tunes with a strong emphasis on entertaining and engaging with his audience. Hes flying in especially for this show so don't miss this one!
Local boy Louis is making a name for himself around the southwest area, bringing a new sound and style to his originals and indie/folk covers. He has a charming stage presence, keeping the audience smiling with him! The People's String Foundation mix passionate theatrics with an urban gypsy sound. Led by Ben Sutcliffe (musical director for Rogue, Kneehigh and Bish Bash Bosh Theatre companies) who's virtuoso violin styles have landed him to play with the likes of The Levellers, The Stranglers, The Yardbirds and Gary Stringer from Reef.

Rob C Force has been a cornerstone of the Plymouth music scene for many years fronting both his band C Force and popular covers band The Wireless. A versatile singer/songwriter/guitar player with a vast repertoire, Rob sings classic covers by the likes of Tom Waits, Carole King, Bowie, Talking Heads, Future Islands and Paul Simon and delivers down to earth original songs based on his reflections on society and the interesting characters he's met through the years!
Olly Parker is at the crest of a wave of young musical talent rising up in Plymouth and has has his fingers in a lot of musical pies! Being a core member of popular local bands such as The Busketeers, Drakes Island and most recently Pint Sized Tiger. His original acoustic music fuses a bit of funk, soul and blues and takes inspiration from John Mayer, Tom Misch and James Taylor.
Elani's stunning voice is one part sensitive and nine parts WOW, and has led her to perform on the regions best stages alongside some of its best acts. An accomplished guitarist, Elani's music swells and twists and draws you in with a delicate mix of jazz, soul & folk - for fans of Lianne La Havas, Laura Marling and Lucius. Known for his atmospheric highs and soulful grit, Devon’s Jamie Yost blends his own take on poetic lyricism and introspective songwriting. His performances are not shy of raw emotion with comparisons to Ben Howard, Daughter, Bon Iver and Matt Corby. Jamie is the frontman of rising Plymouth band Drakes Island.
Influenced by Red Hot Chilli Peppers, John Frusciante, Joss Stone, Chainska Brassika, Jack White, Sheryl Crow and many more Bess Howard-Baker is a young Singer/Songwriter with an original, soulful voice that is wide ranging and expressive.
Born in Plymouth, Bred up North, Andy Quick is an experimental and prolific songwriter who has been pounding dance floors and lighting up major festival stages for the last 10 years. As front man of Land Of The Giants and Andy Quick Band his songbook is a mash up of flavours and impossible to pin down but think roots, blues, soul and ska and you are halfway there! Amongst recent appearances at Glastonbury, Boardmasters and NASS he is set to headline this years Ocean City Jazz and Blues fest and we are delighted to welcome him to RWYard Sessions for a solo set.
Hailing from Sunderland and residing in Stockholm international bluesman Jake cut his teeth and made his name as the ferocious (most likely topless) lead guitarist in raucous funk blues band The Big Sets.
He is heavily influenced by BB King, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Vince Lee, Parliament and Funkadelic and he brings this high calibre to his solo set. Jake will be accompanied on the double bass by the one and only Vince Lee so we're in for a double treat!
