Turn the moon into a moving picture

Discover what makes Plymouth’s tides move through a playful mix of art, animation and science at SeaFest this September.

As part of Tide Together, the public engagement programme accompanying artist David Cotterrell’s Intertidal commission for Sea for Yourself, artist and facilitator Sophie Mellor will be inviting families to make their own Moon Zoetropes.

These simple handmade animation devices bring sequences of pictures to life. Using the phases of the moon, changing tides and the plants and creatures found in Plymouth’s intertidal zone as inspiration, families can explore the relationship between the moon and the sea while creating something to take home.

The activity is part of Intertidal, a major Sea for Yourself commission exploring the constantly changing boundary between land and sea and the often-unseen forces that connect Plymouth with the ocean.

Alongside the zoetropes, colouring activities and simple creative resources will give younger children another way to discover the intertidal world and begin exploring why the moon and sea are so closely connected.
