Hai Coo's Trail
Hai Coo’s Trail follows Hai Coo the Pigeon around Plymouth in a temporary public installation of haiku and other Japanese short form poetry. Curated and designed by Plymouth Laureate of Words, R.C. Thomas in conjunction with Literature Works, the installation has been launched for SOUND: Plymouth Poetry Festival 2026.
Fifteen budding poets, some of whom had never written poetry before, joined R.C. at his workshop at Plymouth Central Library in February to learn ‘The Secrets of Haiku’. With editorial feedback, they spent time beyond the workshop each crafting and fine-tuning a haiku for the installation.
With R.C. Thomas’ own additions by way of haiku and solo tan-renga, there are twenty short poems on display around the City Centre and surrounding areas. Most of these appear as vinyl decals in the windows of local businesses. There’s also a larger display to be found at Royal William Yard. Check out the map to locate them all:
