Five lighthouse sculptures have arrived at Royal William Yard and are set to stay for the summer, blazing a trail through the site as part of St Luke's Guiding Lights, a city-wide art trail raising money for St Luke's Hospice Plymouth.

Running from 6th July to 13th September, the trail brings more than 40 individually designed lighthouses to prime spots across Plymouth. The eye-catching 2.4m tall lighthouses – each one designed and decorated by an accomplished individual artist and backed by a local sponsor.

At the Yard, visitors can follow the trail to:

  • Main Arch entrance: 'Let the Light In', by Katie Ibbot, sponsored by TEC Construction
  • The Green: 'Spotlight', by Natalie Ratcliffe, sponsored by Michael Spiers
  • Firestone Arch: 'City to Hills', by Laurie King, sponsored by David May Motor Services
  • Arcade: 'Mr Smee-ton', by Lynsey and Kieron Reilly, sponsored by The Bailey Partnership
  • Devil's Point Staircase: 'Whale Watcher', by Andrea Brown, sponsored by JEM Scaffolding and Obedair Construction

Those keen to track down every lighthouse across the city can download the Guiding Lights app for £1.99, which includes maps, a pedometer and reward codes from sponsors. Trail leaflets are available from Royal William Yard’s Welcome Suite in Gatehouse (just to the left as your enter under the main arch). Printed maps will be available from Plymouth Tourist Information Centre and most St Luke’s charity shops for a suggested £2 donation.

The charity chose the lighthouse as a fitting symbol for Plymouth, a nod to the city's maritime history and a beacon of hope and safety. That theme runs right through to the cause behind the project: every sculpture sold at the closing auction will go towards the end of life care St Luke's provides for patients and families.

After 10 weeks on display, the sculptures will gather for a farewell exhibition at the Market Hall in Devonport from 25th – 27th September, before going under the hammer at the Guiding Lights auction at the University of Plymouth on 1st October, with all proceeds supporting St Luke's Hospice Plymouth.
