The celebrated Devil's Point staircase is now back in place and open to the public, following a successful restoration project.

The striking 63-step structure, which has become a landmark feature of the South West Coast Path, is now ready to welcome visitors once again. Since its installation 11 years ago, the staircase has become an integral link in the National Trail.

Nicknamed the 'Stairway to Devon,' this architectural marvel was completely removed from its position on the Plymouth peninsula in November 2024 and transported to Falmouth, where specialists conducted blast cleaning, repairs, and repainting.

The impressive steel structure, which connects Royal William Yard to Devil's Point, cuts dramatically through a 12-metre high defensive wall and penetrates a 1-metre thick limestone fortification.

The original coastal route has reopened, allowing uninterrupted access along one of Britain's most spectacular walking trails. The diversion that has been in place for the last few months no longer needs to be observed.

Walkers can once again enjoy the full coastal experience as they journey between the cultural landmarks of Devil's Point and Royal William Yard, with its marina and waterside boardwalks.

The award-winning staircase, designed by Devon-based Gillespie Yunnie Architects, features a concealed glass viewing platform offering stunning views across the Tamar Estuary to Mount Edgcumbe in Cornwall. At night, LED lighting bathes the structure in changing colors, creating a dramatic visual display against the historic Grade I listed site.

This restoration ensures this remarkable piece of architecture will continue to serve both locals and visitors exploring both the Yard and the South West Coast Path for many years to come.
