The countdown to Christmas is on at Plymouth’s historic Royal William Yard, which will once again transform into a winter wonderland filled with festive markets, unique places to shop and socialise, a Christmas tree on the lawn, and twinkling illuminations throughout the iconic waterfront destination.

A season of surprises, visitors will have plenty to look forward to including a visit from a life-size polar bear!

Taking place inside the Grade I listed Melville building, its courtyard, and Arcade in Brewhouse building, these much-loved markets will feature over 60 stalls showcasing the South West’s finest artisans, traders and makers. From festive foods and artisan produce to handmade gifts, ceramics, candles, homewares and crafts, there is something for everyone.
Festoon lighting, hot food and mulled drinks add to the magical atmosphere, while Plymouth City Brass will fill the air with festive tunes during each of the Wednesday evening markets from 6.30pm. On Wednesday 3rd December, visitors will also be treated to a performance from a roaming life-sized polar bear puppet by Above Bounds Theatre Company – an enchanting seasonal spectacle for all ages to enjoy.
Gifts Galore
Christmas shopping is made even easier thanks to the Yard’s collection of inspiring independents. New this year is Pebble, a chic women’s fashion boutique offering stylish pieces perfect for party season, and Nala’s Pet Co, filled with treats and toys for pampered pets.
Shoppers can also discover clothing, accessories and interiors at Identity Fashion; beautifully curated haircare gifts from YOKE; indulgent festive hampers from Le Vignoble; and luxurious skincare sets or pampering vouchers from Enhance Aesthetics & Wellness. Many restaurants and retailers also offer gift vouchers, ideal for those wanting to give the gift of an experience this Christmas.
Festive Feasting
Festive flavours await across the Yard’s eateries, with a host of seasonal menus perfect for catch-ups, celebrations and cosy nights out. Wildwood is serving up an Italian-inspired winter menu brimming with comforting dishes, while The News Café has created an irresistible selection of festive starters, mains and desserts, from pan-roasted turkey with all the trimmings to slow-roasted pork belly with spiced rhubarb.
Bistrot Pierre will host its popular Festive Soirée Gastronomique 6-course feasts on 9th and 16th December, offer special Christmas Party savings earlier in the week, and host a New Year's Eve celebrations with 4 courses with a live singer. Seasonal specials and celebratory drinks can also be found at Seco Lounge, The Hook & Line, Wagamama, BLOCK Café and Steel Brew Co.
Seasonal Entertainment & Workshops
Creativity and culture also take centre stage this Christmas. The News Café will host a festive wreath-making workshop on 8th December, led by Honors Flower School, offering guests the chance to craft a wreath while enjoying a seasonal treat. For younger visitors, children's cookie-making sessions will run throughout the month, brightening festive afternoons with hands-on fun.
Meanwhile, Everyman Cinema will screen a programme of Christmas classics, including favourites such as Die Hard, Home Alone, Love Actually, It’s A Wonderful Life and The Holiday, alongside a selection of ballet, opera and theatre performances. With velvet sofas, cosy lighting and snacks served direct to your seat, it’s an indulgent way to embrace the season.
Out & About
Visitors can also make the most of the stunning coastal surroundings. A winter walk along the South West Coast Path is the perfect way to blow away the cobwebs before warming up with a festive drink or leisurely meal. For the brave, Boxing Day and New Year’s sea swims at Firestone Bay remain a much-loved tradition, with the Halogi mobile sauna providing a welcome (and toasty) retreat afterwards.
Additional parking introduced at Devil’s Point has created over 100 extra spaces, making it easier than ever to explore. The Cremyll Ferry is currently operating from Royal William Yard Marina, providing a handy connection over to Cremyll Quay and the Rame Peninsula – for the latest timetable information, please visit the Plymouth Boat Trips website.
Give Back This Christmas
The Yard’s annual Christmas Charity Appeal also returns, bringing the community together in a spirit of generosity. This year’s collections will support two vital local causes: Ginsters’ Project 35 – a partnership helping families experiencing food poverty – and Children’s Wishes Plymouth, which provides essential clothing for local children.
Donations of non-perishable food, toiletries, hygiene items, and children’s clothing (including coats, socks, tights, scarves and gloves) are warmly welcomed from visitors, Yard residents and businesses between 26th November and 10th December, with drop-off points at the Welcome Suite and in the Ground Floor collection area.
